Understanding Home Health Care Costs: A Guide for Families

When a loved one requires home health care services, financial considerations can add an extra layer of stress for families. At Amavi, we understand these concerns. Our goal is to provide guidance that helps put your mind at ease regarding the costs of care, so you can focus on what matters most - your family member's well-being.

Medicare Coverage for Home Health Care

For many patients, Medicare is a valuable resource in covering home health expenses. Under Medicare Part A and Part B, the following home health services may be covered if these conditions are met:

  • Doctor's Orders: Care must be prescribed by the patient's physician via an established plan of care that is regularly reviewed.
  • Skilled Care Need: The patient requires intermittent skilled nursing, physical/occupational/speech therapy, or continued therapy services.
  • Homebound Status: Leaving home requires a considerable and taxing effort for the patient.
  • Medicare-Approved Provider: The home health agency must be Medicare-certified.

It's important to note that while Medicare covers many essential services, some limitations exist. Personal care services without a skilled need, 24/7 in-home care, and meal delivery are generally not included.

Other Coverage Options

Medicaid: State-specific Medicaid programs may help cover home health costs for those with limited income/assets. Coverage details vary, so check your state's eligibility guidelines.

Private Insurance: Review your policy details carefully as private plans have differing coverage for home health services and associated out-of-pocket costs.

Veterans Benefits: Qualifying veterans may receive home care through the VA's medical benefits package based on their specific needs and service availability.
